The Chicago Police department has launched a new text message service provided by Nixle. The service will be able to immediately send alerts to a cell phone or e-mail containing information about public safety concerns such as child abductions and crime related traffic jams.
Nixle is similar to the social networking service Twitter in that text messages can be sent in 140 characters or less. The service is secure and only allows transmissions from the police to the end user. To report suspicious activity, users will still have to go through the same channels to contact Police. About 3,600 law enforcement agencies around the county have signed up for Nixle since it went live last year.
